Lame Duck

That's right. It is official. On Wednesday, I told my boss that I am leaving the fire department. His reaction was not what I expected. What I expected was to see my boss, a middle aged, slightly over weight, white man, jump up, burst into song, and breakdance. What I actually got was, first a stunned silence followed by really encouraging words. He told me that he hated to lose me, that I have done terrific work for the department, and that he knows that I will take "the same work ethic, determination, high quality work, and analytical mind" and apply it to teaching in China and that he knows that I will "touch the lives of so many". The next day he took me out to lunch as a send off. It is amazing how things work out. He also told me that once I finished the project that I am working on, he understands that I may need to take time off to get things prepared for the move.

Now the lame duck status begins! You know how it is. Once you give notice on a job, you officially become a lame duck. Even though you are still there, you are already gone. They have already started talking about "now that Frank is leaving" and usually they do this right in my face. What's up with that? On the other hand, there is a good side to being a lame duck. It is so liberating to know when you are leaving. I am constantly thinking about the things I will be able to accomplish once I no longer have to “build bricks for Pharaoh”, even if it is only a temporary reprieve.

Next week, on Saturday, August 2 we have our yard sale. Everything must go!!! We have things all over the house with stickers on them. Amanda has been like a whirling dervish putting prices on everything. I have been afraid to stay in one place too long. I might end up with a price tag on me. How much are lame ducks going for these days? I better check EBay.

Anyway, time is steadily moving forward and right now Amanda and I are trying to keep up. It won’t be long now until we fly the coop. Hopefully we will be able to spend some time with all of you before that happens. – Frank

I wanna hang a map of the world in my house. Then I'm gonna put pins into all the locations that I've traveled to. But first, I'm gonna have to travel to the top two corners of the map so it won't fall down. Mitch Hedberg (1968 - 2005)

Countdown

The countdown has begun. We have less than three months until we move. There is so much to do in that time. We have to get our visas, sell the house, figure out how we will do our banking abroad, have a yard sale, visit family and friends, to name just a few things. Once we are in China, we are going to use this blog to keep everyone abreast of our happenings and try to pass on the sights, sounds, smells, and personality of this ancient and immense country. - Frank
